One happy camper here!! After seeing the trouble Wise Guy and Lovejoy had with “Nights in White Satin”, I gnawed bullets when they announced Vice would come out on DVD. I loved this show, saw a lot more to the creativity and inspiration than critics did. But Vice is not just the story, the style — it’s the MUSIC! I know these episodes and ever tune that was perfectly picked to set the stage of each scene. What if they messed with the soundtrack??? Heaven forbid!

Well I am here to say - It’s VICE Heaven!! The pristine episodes, in full movie stereo sound (stereo sound only can in the middle of the series) shown at their full running speed, not compressed for time so they can get more commercials in. This is VICE perfection. The transfer is beautiful, you could not ask for more, loaded with extras, but the main thing it’s Season one as it was MEANT to be. The MUSIC!! Exactly, not changes!

Applause to Mann and Universal by doing right by Vice fans. All I can say is bring on Seasons 2-5 ASAP!!!

I grew up with Miami Vice on it’s initial run here on the BBC in England. It’s combination of music, photography and locations made such a strong impact on me, even to this day. I have all the episodes on VHS but am desperate to get them on dvd, if only the first 2 seasons which were the best.
I have recently contacted UNIVERSAL PLAYBACK in the UK, and they told me that they are trying to put together a season one release, but that it was proving difficult to gain the rights to include all the original music from so many artists in each episode. I was told that it would be a year at the earliest, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Miami Vice was a groundbreaking show, and I advise anyone who ever watched it to get the DVD should it be released.

The plot for Storm Warning has been done before. Once again we have the stranded couple who are tormented and exploited by a group of degenerate, redneck, perverted sickos in the Australian outback. The difference in this movie is the atmosphere and acting are extremely effective and there is a chilling sense of forboding throughout the movie. Additionally the revenge and sadistic retribution enacted by the female lead is starteling even to the seasoned horror addict. I found the director’s first effort, Urban Legend rather lightweight but he has matured in leaps and bounds for Storm Warning.

STORM WARNING is one of the most brutal and savage thrillers you’ll ever see. The plot has been done about a million times, but the director and five actors manage to stand the story on its head and give it a few new spins that will make your hair stand up.

The conceit of the movie is simple: Pia (Nadia Fares) and Rob (Robert Taylor) are an upwardly mobile couple in Australia who go for a bit of sailing and end up lost in dangerous territory. Pia is an artist and Rob is a lawyer, and neither of them are suited for what they encounter in this film.

The screenplay was written over 30 years ago, but was thought too violent to produce, so it never got made till now. After viewing the film, I have to agree about the violence. This is mean, bitter stuff that will take a truly stouthearted viewer to watch.

I also had to admit that the scenery is breathtaking. The Australian setting is absolutely beautiful. With the way the director slowly pulls the audience into the madness that’s about to erupt, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the local flora and fauna. I have to admit that the pacing was, at times, almost too slow. But once the story got up and running, you couldn’t break away from the screen.

While running from the storm and hoping to get their bearings, Pia and Rob reach a remote farmhouse. After breaking in, they quickly discover that there is nothing normal about anyone that lives there. Sex toys lay out in the open and pages ripped from skin magazines decorate the walls. I knew at that point that only bad things could happen.

Just minutes later, Rob discovers a huge amount of marijuana growing in the barn. He realized at the same time I did that whoever lived there couldn’t afford to let them escape. And at that moment, the rough men they’d seen earlier arrived back at the house.

This is when the movie really ratchets up. I knew things were about to go south quickly, and from that moment until the end of the movie, I never took a relaxed breath.

The menace grows slowly, almost like the tightening of a vise, and it won’t let the viewer go. I was mesmerized by what Pia and Rob had to deal with. One of the worst parts was the fate of the joey, the baby kangaroo. Although I could understand it, the idea of what took place is still stomach-wrenching.

One of the worst aspects was the gradual build-up of the violence. I totally understood how everything could escalate and be so bad. And I understood the steps Pia and Rob had to take to ensure their safety. Watching all of it was hard, and there was a definite mix of vindication and horror elicited on my part.

The fishing lure trap in the barn is going to set the teeth of a lot of viewers on edge. It was horribly hard to watch, and the subsequent beating later - complete with all the special effects - was difficult.

STORM WARNING is recommended only for horror fans and suspense junkies that like blood and realistic effects. The tense atmosphere is amazing, but the violence is drastic. The director, Jamie Blanks (URBAN LEGEND), clearly knew what he wanted and got it. Although a lot of the low-budget horror films end up with a grainy finish, STORM WARNING looks slick and pretty. A top-notch thriller that draws blood.

This review refers to the Anchor Bay DVD of “Nosferatu…The Vampyre” (1979 version/1999 DVD release)…..

I Love It!..I say this very enthusiastically, as normally I am slow to warm to remakes. Especially when the original is such a masterpiece itself. This German remake is magnificent. Written, produced and directed by Werner Herzog, and starring Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, and Bruno Ganz, it’s an intoxicating,and edge of your seat horror film, that you won’t want to miss a minute of.The images are beautifully photographed,the score is inticing,the story is brillantly acted and Herzog is artful in his direction.

The story takes place in the mid 19th century. Johnathan Harker, is about to leave his most beautiful and pure hearted wife Lucy to complete a big real estate deal. He must travel far to Transylvania, and not many are willing to lead him there. There are stories of wolves and spirits, and beautiful Lucy has a bad premonition of things to come.

Johnathon does not heed any of the warnings. He arrives, after a long journey, at the castle of “Count Dracula”. Dracula(Kinski) is horrifying to look at and mysterious as well. Harker, closes the deal, and, the vampire Dracula is off to spread the Plague and danger to Harker’s town and mostly his pure hearted wife! It’s as thrilling as any Dracula movie ever and even “Renfield” adds his charms!

Anchor Bay has made a nice transfer to DVD. The wonderful cinematography is done justice as it is presented in widescreen(1.85:1), with a nice picture and colors(although at times it seemed a bit grainey). It may be viewed in either the original German Language(Dolby surround) with or without English subtitles, or the English Language version(Mono),also widescreen. There are no subtitiles on the English side, but was helpful to view all the credits in English after I watched the German version. There is director commentary, behind the scene featurettes and U.S. and Spanish Theatrical trailers. It also came in one of the better DVD cases I’ve seen.

This masterful remake of an already classic German masterpiece, is a wonderful homage to F.W. Murnau. If you haven’t seen it yet, go for it, it’s well worth it.

“Nosferatu the Vampyre” is director Werner Herzog’s tribute to F. W. Murnau, whom he considers to be Germany’s greatest filmmaker, as well as a haunting gothic horror tale in its own right. It is a remake of Murnau’s 1922 film “Nosferatu”, which is the earliest surviving cinematic adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula”. Herzog has combined ideas from Murnau’s film, Bram Stoker’s novel, and his own imagination in creating a film that is, if anything, even more expressionistic and romanticist than the 1922 masterpiece. It is also more languid and pathetic than other “Dracula” adaptations.

This version of the Dracula tale, like 1922’s “Nosferatu”, takes place in Germany and Transylvania. Jonathan Harker (Bruno Ganz) is a real estate agent employed by a madman named Renfield (Roland Topor) to deliver a contract to Count Dracula in Transylvania, who wishes to purchase property in Wismar, Germany. When he reaches his destination, Jonathan finds a hideous, predatory Count Dracula (Klaus Kinski) eager to sign the deed to his new home. Several days later, ill and traumatized by horrors that he experienced at Dracula’s castle, Jonathan understands that his young wife Lucy (Isabelle Adjani) will be in grave danger if Dracula reaches Wismar and sets out to save her. Count Dracula’s arrival in Wismar coincides with the Plague. The city is overrun with rats and its population decimated by disease. Only Lucy comprehends the nature of the evil that has befallen the city and understands what she must do to stop it.

“Nosferatu the Vampyre” adheres pretty closely to Murnau’s storyline, rather than Stoker’s, except for the ending. The characters and actions have been embellished, however, sometimes with inspiration from the “Dracula” novel. Herzog’s film moves slowly but steadily and spends more time with the characters than any previous “Dracula” adaptation. Count Dracula closely resembles Murnau’s vampire but is even more grotesque and the least aristocratic of any cinematic Dracula. He is rodent-like and closely associated with rats and the Plague. But he departs from other Dracula interpretations in lamenting his permanent un-dead existence without light or love for centuries, which makes him a slightly tragic character. Although Count Dracula is the force that drives the narrative, the first half of the film is about Jonathan, and the second half concentrates on Lucy. Lucy Harker takes much inspiration from the character of Mina Harker in the novel “Dracula”. The film’s Lucy is more mystical and less methodical than the book’s Mina. But, like Mina, she is stronger and smarter than the characters who surround her, and she tries her best to save everyone in spite of their blindness. Isabelle Adjani’s Lucy Harker is the strongest heroine of any “Dracula” film.

Like Murnau’s 1922 film, “Nosferatu the Vampyre” is visually expressionistic and romanticist. More of the film takes place outdoors than in other adaptations. There are lots of wide open spaces which are brightly lit, lending the outdoor scenes an airy feel, while scenes indoors tend to be dark and oppressive. This is clearly taken from the Murnau film, with its seaside scenes and bright sunshine. But the color cinematography and superior technology creates a sense of space that Murnau’s film doesn’t have. Colored lighting is lifted directly from Murnau’s film, however. 1922’s “Nosferatu” was filmed in black-and-white and tinted several colors to communicate time and mood. “Nosferatu the Vampyre”’s night scenes are bathed in blue light, and the inside of Dracula’s castle is close to sepia, producing much the same effects as Murnau’s toning.

English and German versions of “Nosferatu the Vampyre” were filmed concurrently. Werner Herzog shot the scenes with dialogue twice -once in German, once in English. The two versions differ by only seconds in length, but they are edited slightly differently. Whichever one you see, “Nosferatu the Vampyre” is one of the most interesting adaptations of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, even if it is an indirect adaptation. It is also the slowest paced and highly expressionistic, which somewhat narrow its appeal.

I think my five stars say it all. (if that doesn’t do it my review title should)

It turns out that Uryu Ishida — the last of the Quincies — is the target of the energy-sucking Bounts. And “Bleach Volume 18″ expands a bit more on the Bounts by revealing some of their backstory and their powers… which, unfortunately, turn out to be pretty formidable. Lots of action, familiar characters and a shocking revelation… now, if only one of the episodes weren’t one long flashback from a not-very-interesting character.

With Uryu bedridden from his injuries, his pals sit around and bicker, waiting for something to happen. Unfortunately something does — twin Bounts Ho and Ban attack, and these little brats can control water with their “dolls,” turning it into lethal waterspouts and ripping people apart from the inside out. It takes an old friend newly arrived in the living world to defeat the Bounts, and show what happens to them if their dolls are incinerated.

But in the commotion, Uryu has wandered out into the street and into the care of the rebel Bount Yoshino, who tells him about how she once met and fell in love with the Bounts’ leader Jin Kariya. But when the other Bounts capture both Yoshino and Uryu, Ichigo and his friends must storm the Bounts’ stronghold to get them back. Unfortunately, there’s a person they’d never expected to see there — a Soul Reaper, fighting for Kariya.

The biggest problem with the eighteenth volume of “Bleach” is the third episode, which is almost entirely made up of Yoshino blabbering to Uryu about her past life with Kariya and the reasons she was with him. To be honest, this episode is kind of boring, and it feels like it was made to fill up time because her story doesn’t really serve any purpose except to show “Kariya is evil! Bad! Really bad! See, he’s evil! Angst!”

It’s quite a relief when we focus on Ichigo and Co. instead — lots of waterspouts and deadly bubbles, creepy little boys and spurts of comic relief (Ichigo and Rukia bicker relentlessly over Uryu’s sickbed). And the battle between Yoshino and Koga’s dolls (fire-torso versus metal spider) is a pretty solid one, even as the episode leads up to an inevitable (and very messy) clash between Ichigo and Kariya’s little gang. This oughta be good.

Uryu and Yoshino get much of the spotlight in this episode, with the Bount woman reminding Uryu of a tragic figure from his past (though technically not canon). The Quincy’s chivalry shows up again, as Uryu tries to save her and his friends from the Bounts. The big characterization problem is that Ichigo seems to have lost some brain cells — he’s a smart guy, yet he doesn’t know that blowing up a fire extinguisher and leaping down an elevator shaft might not be a good idea?

Oh yeah, and a new character is introduced — a Soul Reaper who is working with the Bounts, and who is recognized as a member of Squad 11. This should be interesting.

“Bleach Volume 18″ has some flaws, including an episode that mostly consists of not-very-interesting flashbacks. But it also introduces some intriguing new twists, and promises to get ever more exciting.

This is a supremely disappointing film, especially considering the talent involved. Indeed, the cast would seem to be the summit of African American comedians, starring the three most influntial standups of the modern era: Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, and Eddie Murphy. Murphy obviously was paying respect to his elders when he cast them as his father and grandfather in this story of Harlem in the 1930s. Written and directed by Murphy, the plot involves gangsters and rival nightclub owners but doesn’t add up. What’s a particular shame is that, with three comics as funny as Murphy, Pryor, and Foxx, there are so few laughs and so much misogyny. Do you really want to watch Della Reese get shot in the foot to shut her up? That’s the level of the humor here. –Marshall Fine

Robert Altman and Garrison Keillor combine reality and fantasy in this smooth, ebullient take on the long-running Prairie Home Companion radio show. Set during the show’s fictitious last broadcast–the host station has been bought–the film has plenty of elements from the real PHC radiocasts, including a live audience and the sensational Shoe band. The onstage program is mostly music numbers, a beguiling mix of standards and old-style country. However, the show’s usual comedy sketches are never presented, save for the commercial parodies–this may be a PHC show, but Lake Wobegone is never mentioned. Instead, the sketches are played out as backstage banter that feautres the Johnson Sisters (Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin), a harried stage hand (Maya Rudolph), a former listener turned angel (Virginia Madsen), and Keillor himself (a crusty alter-ego named simply G.K.). A few characters from the real PHC are given life: the singing cowboys Dusty and Lefty and gumshoe Guy Noir are embodied by Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, and Kevin Kline, respectively. Old flames are fanned, stories are spun, new talents are found (Lindsay Lohan has a chance to shine as Streep’s daughter) and everyone wonders if G.K. will do something to ebb the tide of cancellation (personified by Tommy Lee Jones as the corporate Axeman). All of the actors do right as singers, and seem to be having the time of their life. Keillor’s screenplay is perfect fodder for Altman’s usual brand of storytelling, as characters babble on with the camera picking them up often in mid-thought. The film appeared a few months after Altman received an honorary Oscar, and the director is still at the top of his game, creating this smile-inducing, song-filled time, ending with an ethereal last musical number. –Doug Thomas
